About Me

Hi, I'm Carolyn Ellis, also known as The Camel Doc. I'm an adventurer, retired Army Captain, and nurse who has served in the NHS and hospitals across the world, including active service during the first Gulf War. I've had the privilege of working with eminent explorers like Colonel John Blashford-Snell and lecturing at universities and schools across the UK.

I believe in grabbing opportunities with both hands and then figuring out how to make it happen! This feisty spirit has led me to jump out of planes, raft down rivers, climb mountains, and cross deserts - including being part of the first-ever crossing of the fearsome Chinese desert, Taklamakan - known as 'The Desert of Death'. On that journey, I was the only woman among 14 men and, as the medic, my bravery and determination earned me recognition from the late Queen, along with the first-ever Woman of Achievement Gold Medal from the Scientific Exploration Society.

Since retiring from nursing, and with the encouragement of my two daughters, I've written my first book, ‘Do Explorers Wear Socks?’. It's a tale of the real-life adventure of 1000 miles of sand, 30 camels, 14 men, one woman... "who may or may not wear socks!" My mission, whether on expedition or on a more literary challenge, is to inspire people of all ages to never stop pushing boundaries, asking questions, and to always follow their dreams, even if the odds are stacked against them.
